Tooth extractions may be necessary for a variety of reasons including decay, injury and in preparation for orthodontic treatment. During an extraction, we make patient comfort a top priority. We will typically use a local anesthetic to numb the immediate area. Patients may also be provided with other forms of sedation if needed or desired. Our office specializes in IV sedation, oral sedation and laughing gas.

During the extraction, we will use special dental tools to carefully and quickly pull the tooth from its socket. Most patients find they feel little-to-no pain or discomfort during the tooth removal. Immediately after the extraction, we get to work on controlling any bleeding. The patient will be asked to bite down on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes in order to help a blood clot to form at the extraction site. For the next day, the patient should take extra measures to avoid disturbing this clot. This includes avoiding smoking, using a straw, consuming alcohol or exercising vigorously. The patient can reduce swelling by applying an ice pack for up to 20 minutes at a time during the first day.

Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Wisdom teeth extractions are most commonly provided for teens and young adults who have developed their wisdom teeth, also called the third molars. These teeth often grow at a severe angle, and there is often little space available for them. That is why 95% of patients will ultimately have these teeth removed. A wisdom teeth extraction is generally more intricate than a standard tooth extraction.

A patient can expect it to take a week or longer to completely recover following wisdom teeth extraction. They can expedite recovery by getting lots of rest, drinking plenty of fluids and staying properly nourished. Patients should keep in mind that they will want to avoid tough foods during recovery. They will want to stick to soft foods only and gradually work their way back up to tougher foods as they start to feel better. The patient should also make sure to follow any special instructions provided by their dentist to ensure a successful recovery.
