Emergency dentistry refers to treatment that is provided with little-to-no prior notice. The most common reason to require emergency dental treatment is due to an accident or injury that leaves a tooth noticeably damaged. Our dentists understand that unforeseen events sometimes happen, and we will do our very best to accommodate any patient who requires immediate treatment. Remember, almost any smile can be restored with the right procedures.
Some of the most common dental emergencies include:
If a dental emergency occurs, you should contact our office immediately. Letting us know about the situation is the best way for us to plan accordingly. Although we cannot see every patient right away, we will do our best to accommodate. We also recommend that our patients make appointments whenever possible. If you or a loved one is ever experiencing a life-threatening emergency, you should call 911 immediately. This includes injuries like uncontrollable bleeding or broken bones.
There are also certain actions you can take as you wait to receive professional treatment. If a tooth is fractured or broken, you should gently rinse the mouth with warm water. Biting down on a gauze pad is recommended if there is heavy bleeding. You can also use an ice pack to reduce swelling. Over-the-counter pain relievers can be used to manage pain if necessary.
If a permanent tooth is lost, you may be able to save it if you act fast. The tooth should be rinsed off using clean water. Do not use any soap or chemicals on the tooth. The tooth should be kept moist by placing it in a glass of milk. If you do not have any milk, you can keep it in the mouth near the cheek. The tooth should not be stored in water, as that will kill the root surface cells. The tooth can only survive outside the mouth for a short period of time, so you will need to contact our office immediately. We cannot guarantee that any tooth can be saved, but our team will do our best.
